Student Question | Should We Think Twice Before Buying Online?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  FEBRUARY 23, 2016 5:30 AM February 23, 2016 5:30 am Comment

With the click of a button, we can have almost anything delivered right to our front door — sneakers, toothpaste, even groceries. But what’s the environmental cost of all those home deliveries? The billions of discaded cardboard boxes and fleets of trucks zipping around neighborhoods?
Should we think twice before making online purchases?
In “E-Commerce: Convenience Built on a Mountain of Cardboard,” Matt Richtel writes:
Ruchit Garg, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, says that he worries that something isn’t right with his Internet shopping habit. With each new delivery to his doorstep — sometimes several in a day — he faces the source of his guilt and frustration: another cardboard box.
Then, when he opens the shipment, he is often confronted with a Russian nesting doll’s worth of boxes inside boxes to protect his electronics, deodorant, clothing or groceries. Mr. Garg dutifully recycles, but he shared his concerns recently on Twitter.
A handful of scientists and policy makers are circling the same question, grappling with the long-term environmental effect of an economy that runs increasingly on gotta-have-it-now gratification. This cycle leads consumers to expect that even their modest wants can be satisfied like urgent needs, and not always feel so great about it.
The article continues:
The environmental cost can include the additional cardboard — 35.4 million tons of containerboard were produced in 2014 in the United States, with e-commerce companies among the fastest-growing users — and the emissions from increasingly personalized freight services.
“There’s a whole fleet of trucks circulating through neighborhoods nonstop,” said Dan Sperling, the founding director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis, and the transportation expert on the California Air Resources Board. He also is overseeing a new statewide task force of trucking companies and government officials trying to reduce overall emissions from freight deliveries, including for e-commerce.
Dr. Sperling said that consumers shared as much responsibility for the environmental cost of the deliveries as the companies that provided the speedy services.

“From a sustainability perspective, we’re heading in the wrong direction,” he said.

After reading the article, Jamie Gleklen and Robert Schwartz, two members of our new Student Council, wondered: In what ways does the Internet hurt and help the environment? How can we balance convenience with environmental consciousness? And do we have a duty to look after the environment if companies already say that they are working on it?

Students: Read the article, then tell us …

— How much do you shop online? How about your family?

— Have you ever thought about the environmental impact of buying things online? Is it something we should worry about? Should we think twice before making online purchases?

— Are there times when shopping in a brick-and-mortar store makes more sense than buying online, or vice versa? Why?

— Do you have any ideas about how the e-commerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice? Explain.

  1. I think we should think twice before buying online because when you're buying online such as craigslist or something you don't know where it's coming from from or who that person is.because sometimes you have to go pick up the item and go into other people's houses that are complete strangers and you don't know what could happen or what's that person's intentions are and what they are capable of.because their are alot of crazy people thats can hurt you.also because people commit fraud and don't send you what you ordered and just take your money or they will send what you ordered but its just fake. But no it's not that much of a problem because online shopping websites did a system where if that person does not send your item your money while be returned to and won't go to the person who committed fraud. And then they will be reported and taken of that website so they can't do that to anyone else. Also you should think twice before shopping online because what if the item you ordered was stolen then it gets traced to you then you get in trouble for having that stolen item that what happens with craigslist because people steal cars and then they put it for sale and when you buy it and take to your house police show up to your door and says where did you get that car from then you get arrested for somelses dirty work. That you didn't even do.also what if it is used and you didn't even know or it's cheaper in the store and you're just paying to much for your item that's why i consider going to the store and seeing if they have it first and see if it is cheaper so you don't over pay.

  2. This weeks quote is ¨Should we think twice about buying online?¨ I believe that it depends on the website, item you are buying, and the price of the item. I never buy anything off of these websites. The websites are Ebay and Amazon. But if i do buy it, I make sure that the picture was taken, not screenshotted or another model of the item. And i do not pay too high of a price. Cause’ if the price is high, and you do not get the item that you wanted, then you were screwed out of money. Sometimes you can send the item back so you can get your money back, but sometimes the money does not go back to your account. Then you have to get other people involved and all of that is totally not worth it. I would rather go out, and buy the thing brand new. So i would not have to worry about losing money or getting the wrong item. And it would save more time and money because online you have to pay shipping and handling, taxes. It is just aggravating. One time i bought a quad part online. I had to wait two weeks to get it. And it was 120 dollars. I live pretty close to an advanced auto, and i checked the price there, the price was 80 dollars. Online i had to pay for tax, shipping, and handling. I also had to pay for arrival so i put it at standard so i did not have to pay more. But i could have asked my mom or dad to drive me five minutes away, and not have to go through all of that. It would have saved more time and money. So you should think about buying online.

  3. Should we think twice before buying online? Yes. we should think twice because of many reasons. One reason is sometimes people get ripped off. I saw online someone went to buy a new iphone 7 and was ripped off and sent an iphone 3 and a 4s because 3+4=7. This is sad because the internet should be somewhere where people get along. Another reason is some people can get their information stolen. My dad went to buy something online and had his credit card information stolen but the bank notified him before anything was purchased. Be careful what you buy online because somethings, especially shoes, are fake. Yeezys are $700+ and people can sell fake ones. Make sure you buy from a real certified website and know what to look for with the item purchased. My last reason is because of people who are stalkers. If you buy or sell off of craigslist people will know where you live and where you stay. Meet up with them somewhere public and never go to their house because thats dangerous.

  4. We should think twice about buying online because people could somehow get your money. If people get your credit card information the they can buy thing with your money and then you won't have money anymore. This is one reason why i don't buy things online a lot because i don't want people to steal my money. Also because you could go to buy one thing and get something totally different they you just bought something you don't even need. Some people only buy things online and i'm sure that at least one time something has went wrong and they got scared because it was the wrong thing or they lost money. And losing money isn't something that you want to happen because you have to work hard for that money you don't just get it for free. I don't think buying things online is a good thing if the place you're buying it from isn't a good source or doesn't have a good rating because your money may get lost or you may get the wrong thing. Another reason could be that when they ship it it could take really long or not even come because it got lost in the mail because sometimes they bring it to the wrong house. And if that happens then the person that got it may keep it and then you lost that money because now they have it. So i think you should think twice before you go buy things online because you may not get it of lose your money because someone steals it. But buying things online isn't bad all the time

  5. - I sometimes shop online to buy clothes, or shoes that I can’t find in store, and same for my parents.

    - No, I have never thought of the impact that it can make of buying things online. I think it is something to worry about because it can waste our money. Also, we should think twice before making a purchase online because sometimes you can get scammed or you won’t receive what you purchased for.

    - Sometimes there are times when shopping in a brick-and-mortar store makes more sense that buying online because you can know if you are getting scammed or not, and you can check if it’s a waste or money or not

    - I don’t have any ideas about how the e-commerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice, but I think that it shouldn’t be practiced because it is our responsibility to make sure what we are buying is worth it, and to see if we are not being scammed.

  6. I don't usually shop online but my family does it a lot like every two weeks. I had never thought about the environmental impact of buying things online until reading this article.I think it is something we should worry about and maybe there should be a limit on how many things we can buy online per month so save the environment. I think it is easier to buy it online but sometimes you need to go to the store and look at the item before you buy it. Because sometimes it would look good online and you won't like it in person.or sometimes the store would only have it and it wouldn't be on the website. Maybe to fix the issue they could have a limit on how many stuff you could order per month or they could just go to the store to fix this issue in the world.

    1. What you are saying is true. I have never thought about the impact it can make on us as well. We can probably fix this issue by shopping online less than we already do.

  7. Me and my family shop very little online. It’s because we are worried that something might get mixed up or someone might take our things. We don’t really trust online shopping. No I have never thought about the environmental impact. Yes I think we should think about the environmental impact because we live on this planet and if it starts to get even more polluted and sick. If our planet gets sick so will we. I do think we should think twice about things before we online shop. We should because it doesn’t take that long just to go out and shop like we always used to do. If you’re handicapped then that’s a different thing. Just because you don’t feel like it doesn’t sound like a real excuse just to jeopardize our planet’s health. I think shopping at a store makes more sense than going online and doing it. How do you know what you’re actually buying?. How can you tell that what you’re buying wasn’t already used?. When you shop in real life you can see everything. Plus it’s easier to buy things off the computer because when you’re shopping online it’s easier to steals someone’s identity. I think that we should just stick to off line shopping and just do what we usually do that’s my solution.

  8. The article i read really does make me worried. What if something bad happens while i’m shopping online and people get my information. I dont spend a lot of time shopping online, i do only before school starts and i order a lot of clothes online. I have’nt actually had a problem with it until i read this article. People do have urgent needs but to me i feel that you should be responsible enough to go to the store and get what you need. Now a days everyones lazy and orders online 24/7. My family on the other hand order everything online simply because they don’t have enough time because of work and everything they need to do. When my mom gets the chance to order online she will even if it’s not nessesary stuff we need. She just likes to shop online. I have thought about the environmental impact of buying things online, and i agree it could be something to worry about because we need certain things done in order for the environment to work in our favor. Some people may not see it the way other do but see how it will affect the environment. I feel it could make people very lazy and in a way not smart. Alot of things can lead to different possibilitys, and people should be worried about the outcome. I personally think everyone should think twice about ordering things online, it can benifit you, but also make things worse. There are times when shopping in a brick-and-mortar store makes more sense than buying online. I think it makes more sense because it’s the safest way in my opinion.

  9. Yes we should shop online because it is easier that going out to find one item. But you should always shop from certain websites such as amazon or company websites like nike, o'neill, and DC. it is important because these websites are safer to shop on. Websites that aren't safe to shop on are like ebay and craigslist. I shop online once in awhile, my family does too. No i have never thought about the environmental impact of shopping online because i never thought it could hurt the environment and nature. I guess maybe it could hurt things because of the use of cardboard and plastic. I think we should think twice if we're not sure about a certain website because you never know what we're going to get. Yes sometimes it is more convenient to shop there brick-and-mortar store because you my need something and it's going to be there instead of ordering it online and waiting several days for it to get to your house. Also sometimes stores don't have what you want so you have to shop online for them. Or sometimes if you want to certain item and that's not selling them in the stores you could order it online because they are not sold in stores. An idea could be that Blake on Facebook and other social media sites there is a verified button for sellers on Amazon and eBay exc. so that we know who is legit and who's not. Also another thing is we could stop eating so much cardboard and put everything in plastic boxes instead of cardboard. That's all folks

To be honest I rarely ever do online shopping, but my aunt does a lot of online shopping for clothes, Shoes, and etc

I never thought about the environmental impact online shopping had on this world until I read this article, but now I do think it's something we should worry about because people out there are scammers and hackers and etc and sometimes when u can't see what u are about to be buying in person with ur own eyes someone out there can be giving you a bootleg brand of it. For example if you buy Jordan's online from eBay or something you have to be careful someone doesn't sell you the knock off versions of the shoe you actually wanted.

Yes, there has come a time where shopping in the store is better than shopping online or it could be vice versa because sometimes things that are online aren't in the stores and sometimes things that are in the stores aren't online

I think the industry can make online shopping a more suitable practice by not asking so many questions about your credit card ur paying with online. A better way to get all that information is when they deliver it to your house because if you get hacked that scammer has all of your information.
