Student Question | Should We Think Twice Before Buying Online?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  FEBRUARY 23, 2016 5:30 AM February 23, 2016 5:30 am Comment

With the click of a button, we can have almost anything delivered right to our front door — sneakers, toothpaste, even groceries. But what’s the environmental cost of all those home deliveries? The billions of discaded cardboard boxes and fleets of trucks zipping around neighborhoods?
Should we think twice before making online purchases?
In “E-Commerce: Convenience Built on a Mountain of Cardboard,” Matt Richtel writes:
Ruchit Garg, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, says that he worries that something isn’t right with his Internet shopping habit. With each new delivery to his doorstep — sometimes several in a day — he faces the source of his guilt and frustration: another cardboard box.
Then, when he opens the shipment, he is often confronted with a Russian nesting doll’s worth of boxes inside boxes to protect his electronics, deodorant, clothing or groceries. Mr. Garg dutifully recycles, but he shared his concerns recently on Twitter.
A handful of scientists and policy makers are circling the same question, grappling with the long-term environmental effect of an economy that runs increasingly on gotta-have-it-now gratification. This cycle leads consumers to expect that even their modest wants can be satisfied like urgent needs, and not always feel so great about it.
The article continues:
The environmental cost can include the additional cardboard — 35.4 million tons of containerboard were produced in 2014 in the United States, with e-commerce companies among the fastest-growing users — and the emissions from increasingly personalized freight services.
“There’s a whole fleet of trucks circulating through neighborhoods nonstop,” said Dan Sperling, the founding director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis, and the transportation expert on the California Air Resources Board. He also is overseeing a new statewide task force of trucking companies and government officials trying to reduce overall emissions from freight deliveries, including for e-commerce.
Dr. Sperling said that consumers shared as much responsibility for the environmental cost of the deliveries as the companies that provided the speedy services.

“From a sustainability perspective, we’re heading in the wrong direction,” he said.

After reading the article, Jamie Gleklen and Robert Schwartz, two members of our new Student Council, wondered: In what ways does the Internet hurt and help the environment? How can we balance convenience with environmental consciousness? And do we have a duty to look after the environment if companies already say that they are working on it?

Students: Read the article, then tell us …

— How much do you shop online? How about your family?

— Have you ever thought about the environmental impact of buying things online? Is it something we should worry about? Should we think twice before making online purchases?

— Are there times when shopping in a brick-and-mortar store makes more sense than buying online, or vice versa? Why?

— Do you have any ideas about how the e-commerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice? Explain.

  1. I shop online not to often because I don't usually buy things online the main thing I would use it for is to buy a new case for my cellphone. My family barely does since we go shop at the mall or different stores find everything we might need but maybe once or twice in a year we would but for things we really and can not find. This may impact the environment since there is use of a lot of cardboard boxes when delivered to your home. It's a waste of cardboard boxes since when people receive things the box is usually thrown outside or in the garbage. Yes, we should worry about this because leaving the cardboard boxes outside will make birds or other animal think it's food and which they died because of that. Think twice because not everything you see online can be a good idea or turn out what you want. Buying online with a vice versa can be dangerous in some ways because we can never trust people so it be better to go out and buy it, see when it you are swiping your card. There are so many ideas that can help this improve and stay stable to make sure what you are buying and get it without any problem. Also going out to buy things not only depend online to buy our things. This is what I think about the whole situation about online shopping.

    1. I completely agree with you buying online is always a risk that people take and in the end it is not beneficial for the environment. The best way to make online shopping less harmful to our environment is for us to stop being as dependent on online complaines

  2. Recently, I have been purchasing more products online for the simple fact that I'm a sucker for the cheaper prices. As for my family as a whole it is a once in a blue moon occasion. Before reading this article i have not thought about the environmental impact that online shipment has caused. Now looking at the harsh statistics we should definitely double think and care for the environment. If we add up all the tree killed for the little cardboard box to be sent to us and the amount of gas increase from mailing agencies. This does have a harm on the environment. Despite the fact that are times where buying online may seem more practical. For example, when an item is shipping international, and is not available in stores near us. As for me a discounted item from $50.00 down to $20.00 free shipping. In the end this sparks out of materialistic things that we do not need even though we want, but i know for sure you can not buy another Earth. We could make online shipping safer somehow by using more biodegradable material using less cardboard and something else to contain the shipment.

    2. I like that idea a lot honestly. It makes a lot of sense and is something companies should take into consideration. Companies need to start caring for our environment and changing the way stuff is shipped to make Earth better.

  3. I’ve honestly only shopped online if I really had to. The reasoning for this is that i'm scared that the information that you are personally putting in will get leaked or fraud there are a lot of possibility. I personally would just prefer to shop like we normally do. It's just way easier for me because plus I have to worry about if it's going to come in the way they show it on the picture. I've had to experience that before. Sometimes it either come in broken or if it's clothing wise smaller than you expected well they won't take it back half of the time so your out of luck. This way if you go into a store you can try on and look at the product before you purchase in my opinion. My family feels the same way as I do.I honestly have never thought about the environmental impact of buying things online. Now thinking about it though it’s very hectic. Some things are brought in my boats from across the world and thinking about the smoke will pollute the air. Plus so many people are buying products from online so no telling what's happening. It is definitely something we should worry about. The chemicals that are going into the air is very bad. Thinking twice would be a good choice before we even think about shopping online. In my opinion we could really do without it and if we really want something we would go out and buy it.There are times where people buy online because of the cheaper prices but if you actually read the ratings sometimes people buys things without consulting it then sometimes wind up unhappy. If it was environmentally friendly that would be better but there are so many people ordering small to very large products coming over seas and so many pollutants that are very harmful come out of this.I don't personally think there is a way to make it more sustainable than to stop buying online all together. Today you can’t barely trust anyone. Let alone risking putting your information online which someone could easily hack into if they really wanted to. When you go shopping in a store you can see exactly what you're paying for and you just have to swipe a credit card or pay with cash and it will your information will not stay for long. So personally I think online shopping should be avoided.

    1. I agree with you Megan it is scary to give away your information. Also not really knowing if your information is protected. Like anyone can hack into your stuff.

    2. I agree with Megan giving and letting your personal information is very scary especially online. No matter what giving your information to a site you will only use one or twice is not really worth it. Also you need to be aware of hacker that could get in to your information. So I say it is better not to let your information go to online shopping.

  5. I do not shop online a lot. The only thing i will do is look online for things that our in the store i want to go to. Sometimes i do shop online and that is once in a blue moon. The only thing i buy one is phone cases and vans because they do not have my size shoe in store “short people problems”. My family does not shop online that much either. The only time they will is when they need something that is not in store. Basically the only time i and and my family shop online is when the product they want is not in store. I realised that when i get a phone and they will send it in a box… like why??? Just send it in one of those paper thing it will save a lot of problems. I think it is a problem to worry about cause even when you buy something in stores it comes in a box. If it big thing. For example a toy car that the kids can ride in. I honestly always think twice before i shop online because sometimes you can just go to the store and buy it but sometimes people are too lazy to go out to a store so they just order it and if it is clothes sometimes they will not even fit so they would need to ship it back and then get a different size. Plus when you are shopping online you have to pay for shipping and handling so then your product turns out to be more than you wanted to pay for in the beginning. But if you went to the store you would be spending the amount you wanted to spend because you do not have to pay for shipping and handling cause you can just pay for it there and then

    1. I agree with you since it is important to know these things before risking ourselves. Online shopping is great but its dangerous at the same time we never know what can happen. I like the way you said you would recycle the boxes I have and it works out good.

  7. Online shopping is not got for me at all. I’m very picky when it comes to clothes and i need to try them on and think about them before purchasing something. If order them online and when they come in and i try them on and i don’t like them then i’ll be annoyed. I rather go to the store and try on clothes for two hours than buy clothes online and end up not liking them. As for other items no i don’t shop online at all. I have no problem getting up and running to store to get the things i need. The only person in my family that will shop online is my brother. He’ll sit on there for hours and order things for the house or for his car or phone. Amazon is his favorite online shopping website and he will never give that up. Even though he does online shopping he’ll see still go to the store and get things as well. I think we should worry about ordering things online. It will start to be bad for the environment with all the boxes and it will be bad for the people. They will start to get too lazy that they will never up and run to the store to get something. Some people just order things not even knowing what it is and end up getting them in trouble. Also people will cem other people for their money and they would never know. Online is a crazy place and people don’t realize how far others will go to get money. We can make things better but limiting the amount of items a day and not using cardboard when they mail it. Also having different trucks that will only go up to a certain point in towns for the amount of gas. People don’t see they bad only that now they can be extra lazy.

  9. To tell the truth I have only bought about ten things that were online because I feel if I want that certain product I should get it myself with out relying on the internet. Yes my family does online shopping but my patents normally use it for business and nothing really else. Sometimes they buy something for themselves. My sister buy things from online but most of her item are clothes related or stuff for school. I have never really sat down to understand the whole idea of online shopping. Also never thought about how much the affect the environment on a daliy bases. I feel like this is something that us and other should be very worryed about. Pollution is very concerning about when living in this world alone but air, gas, and oil poulltion is the worst of them. I thing everybody should think twice or even three times to make a right choice to wether we actually need this or not. I find myself sometimes is it really neccecary to click a button to get an item that may be broken or go out to get an item that you know that will be there. The main treason is for this is that there are a lot of scammers out there in the world full of lies. I thing e-commerce should use paper instead of cardboard because it will be a lot cheaper to send out to the coustemer that fill it in with a cardboard box. Mostly do to pollution in this world of humans who was things on a daily based.

    1. yes I do agree with dan. I agree with dan about the whole environment thing because pollution is a big thing we should worry about. Not only because of our planet being harmed but us humans as well. We should take care of this as a whole planet. Not just individually.

  10. Honestly I have never shop online and I'm hoping that I will not intend to shop online in the future ,which is because it can impact the environment very badly and I understand that the envrionment isn't doing very well due to human destruction, but that doesn't mean that we should keep on pursing to make it more worse, for there are organization that help us realize that our consumerist lifestyle can impact the Earth very badly. And another reason to why I don't want to intend to shop online in the future is because I have heard that shoping online can be very addictive, but I feel like it's basically a way for companies or people to hypnotize you to buy there stuff, and I don't want to be addictive to buying stuff, for what good will it be.Therefore I have two older sisters that do shop online, but I'm not sure to what my oldest sister buys, but the only thing that I know is that my second sister has been buying Kylie Jenner Cosmetics online because she apprantly gets all happy about it and tells me when she comes to visit.
Anyway when it comes to me giving a single thought about the environmental impactations on buying things online is zero because I have clarify that I don't buy anything online, but since I have read this article I feel like to those who shop online should care about how their shoping can impact the Earth really badly, because yes we live in a materialistic world and we get a sensation to buy this and that, but this isn't only to the online shoppers, but to every consumer that there is ,you can consume all you want, but due to this the true beauty of nature will die and the creatures that have once roam around will too and because humans can and probably will found ways to survive in a slightly dead world, we will live ,but live in a faker world. Therefore due to my dramatic view on people being consumerist an idea for the consumers will be to ask yourself "Do I really need this" and for the e-comerce I will suggest them to work with people that have organizations that help the environment to give them ideas to how they can help the envrionment.

To be honest, i barely shop online. The only time i or my family shop online is only around christmas time or around the holidays when the weather is bad and even that. The only things we buy are just clothes and just like toys for our young relatives. Other than that, we just go to places like the mall, or like other stores in the area. This impacts the environment in many ways. I think this impacts the environment because whenever you order something, the company or the website you ordered from needs to deliver or ship your order to you from far away places. This causes more pollution and contaminants our environment a lot without us the buyer realizing what this is doing. Also, all the trees they use for making the cardboard boxes for our purchases that we just end up throwing away. Even though it doesn’t seem like a lot, over time, all of our trees that we have on earth will rapidly decline. We need to remember that we dont have unlimited resources like trees, trees are limited to us. To be honest, i think it is better to shop in a store in person because some websites out their you cant trust, they might want to steal your card information. Unlike in a store, you know that your swiping and what your swiping for. I feel like their are ways for the e industry to make online shopping better. It may change and get better overnight but it will with time. This is my opinion about online shopping and what we can do about it.

  12. I shop online a lot honestly. A good 60 percent of my shopping is done online especially when it comes to my sneakers. My sneakers always come from online because the mall usually doesn’t have anything that I like or they are already sold out of the pair or colorway that I wanted. I probably shop online the most out of my family. My mom and sister can go shopping at the mall and still want more. I can’t do that. I usually can’t find that much stuff that I like. I think that it does have an environmental impact on us because the less money companies are getting from stores are the less stores there will be and jobs will end up decreasing which can eventually have a huge impact on not only the United States but around the world. I don’t think we should think twice about shopping online but we should definitely not do it as often as we do. We should monitor it not not do it because we did it twice that week. Yes, shopping at brick and mortar stores could make morse sense than buying it online. It is most likely cheaper at those stores than online and it also gives other companies more business and money instead of the billion dollar corporations. The only problem with all of this is that the next generations are becoming lazier and lazier and soon stores aren’t gonna make enough revenue to keep going. Who knows, maybe even all jobs will be online eventually so you won’t need stores. Anything is possible and I think that shopping online could eventually become a major problem for the world.

  13. I shop online next to never i think i have ordered two things offline for myself twice in my life. To be honest i have never thought about the environmental impact of buying online. I just thought about how much it sucked that i had to wait a week to get my item. Anything that can potentially harm the environment is something we have to worry about. The environment isn't something that you destroy and then you go buy a new one, if the environment goes the human race goes with it. So yea if online shopping affects the environment then we have to worry about it and should think twice about how we order our goods. There are many times when shopping in a brick and mortar store is better the ordering online. In my personal opinion i would rather choose a walk in store then to order. I say this because when you are at the store yourself you can see hands on what your buying and if you truly like it or if it fits right. When you shop online you could order what you want and it could get mixed up or you get sent the wrong size. When i tried to order a Miami Hurricanes jersey online it came in as a youth small. An idea i would have to help the environment when ordering online is to use less cardboard.
