Student Question | Should We Think Twice Before Buying Online?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  FEBRUARY 23, 2016 5:30 AM February 23, 2016 5:30 am Comment

With the click of a button, we can have almost anything delivered right to our front door — sneakers, toothpaste, even groceries. But what’s the environmental cost of all those home deliveries? The billions of discaded cardboard boxes and fleets of trucks zipping around neighborhoods?
Should we think twice before making online purchases?
In “E-Commerce: Convenience Built on a Mountain of Cardboard,” Matt Richtel writes:
Ruchit Garg, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, says that he worries that something isn’t right with his Internet shopping habit. With each new delivery to his doorstep — sometimes several in a day — he faces the source of his guilt and frustration: another cardboard box.
Then, when he opens the shipment, he is often confronted with a Russian nesting doll’s worth of boxes inside boxes to protect his electronics, deodorant, clothing or groceries. Mr. Garg dutifully recycles, but he shared his concerns recently on Twitter.
A handful of scientists and policy makers are circling the same question, grappling with the long-term environmental effect of an economy that runs increasingly on gotta-have-it-now gratification. This cycle leads consumers to expect that even their modest wants can be satisfied like urgent needs, and not always feel so great about it.
The article continues:
The environmental cost can include the additional cardboard — 35.4 million tons of containerboard were produced in 2014 in the United States, with e-commerce companies among the fastest-growing users — and the emissions from increasingly personalized freight services.
“There’s a whole fleet of trucks circulating through neighborhoods nonstop,” said Dan Sperling, the founding director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis, and the transportation expert on the California Air Resources Board. He also is overseeing a new statewide task force of trucking companies and government officials trying to reduce overall emissions from freight deliveries, including for e-commerce.
Dr. Sperling said that consumers shared as much responsibility for the environmental cost of the deliveries as the companies that provided the speedy services.

“From a sustainability perspective, we’re heading in the wrong direction,” he said.

After reading the article, Jamie Gleklen and Robert Schwartz, two members of our new Student Council, wondered: In what ways does the Internet hurt and help the environment? How can we balance convenience with environmental consciousness? And do we have a duty to look after the environment if companies already say that they are working on it?

Students: Read the article, then tell us …

— How much do you shop online? How about your family?

— Have you ever thought about the environmental impact of buying things online? Is it something we should worry about? Should we think twice before making online purchases?

— Are there times when shopping in a brick-and-mortar store makes more sense than buying online, or vice versa? Why?

— Do you have any ideas about how the e-commerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice? Explain.

  1. I think we should think twice about buying online. We should think about what you are buying, how far is it traveling from, and how bad is it for the environment. It could be traveling very far and obviously the amount of fuel that is used and the amount of pollution that is emitted just to get it to your front door is not good for the environment. These are some of the things we have to take into consideration when we buy items online. We also have to think about how often we buy online. I don’t shop online much, every once and awhile i do. I have thought about the environmental impact when i would buy things online but not much because either way it has to get to my house one way or another and it’s not good either way. It is something we as a planet should worry about because it impacts the earth a lot. It may seem like it does almost nothing but if you think about how much stuff get delivered to people’s homes it is something we should worry about. Cutting down something like the pollution that coming out could help a lot. I think not using as many cardboard boxes could help instead of using all those cardboard boxes for everything. Idk how to make that happen but it could help. Cutting down the amount of pollution the trucks they have to deliver the stuff. They could maybe come up with a better fuel source to not let out as much pollution as those big trucks do. Lots of things can be done to make online shopping a more sustainable practice. The only thing is we have to figure them out and put them into action.

Henry you make such a good point. I think the same way you do about this topic. I also do not trust online buying as much. But I feel like it saves a lot of time. Also it saves a lot of effort trying to find what you are looking for too.

    2. I like your points henry. Especially when talking about the pollution and how much fuel is used. Also, how its easier than going to the store. Still think people should go check the stores out just because online shopping is bad sometimes. Good Job henry.

In my personal opinion I do not think that we should stop ordering things online because of the cardboard boxes that the packages come in, however I do think that we should invest in a more environmental friendly box that is 100% recyclable. I think humans are the most harmful thing to the environment in history and I do think we need to stop using our resources so fast before they aren’t available anymore. We also don’t dispose of our waste properly and it’s affecting us negatively. My family and I do not shop online that often, we get most of our stuff from stores. Maybe more people should start doing this and get out the house more and help the environment, it is better for everyone. I have never really thought about the environmental impact before of shopping online but I am thankful that this assignment opened my eyes about all the negative things that are happening because of it. I don’t think this is something we should stress over daily though. I think we just need to slow our roll a little bit and maybe think twice next time we order something online if we can just go to the store and get it instead. There are times though when shopping online makes more sense because of all the good deals that are exclusively online and not in store. I think companies can maybe stop online shopping a little bit by bringing better deals in store to bring people out of the house and spend their money directly.

  3. I actually shop on line a lot, Most if not all of the shopping that i do is online. That goes the same with my family. We do pretty much all our shopping online. Whether it is shoes or shirts or pants or any type of clothes I do pretty much all of it online and so does the rest of my family. For example just yesterday i ordered some new UGG tasman low top boots off of UGGS.com. Instead of going out to buy the uggs i just ordered them online because it saves time. Instead of going out to get it i could be doing something else with my time. I never really thought about the environmental impact of buying things online honestly. I really don’t think we should worry about it because it's a easier way to get things that you want. So therefore i really don't think you should think twice about ordering things online. The one thing i do agree with is yes there are times when shopping in a brick and mortar store makes sense because like if ur at the store get it. Why go back and order online when the product you want is right in front of you that really makes no sense if you think about it. If i'm at a store and i was gonna order something online but it's at the store i'm gonna get it at the store instead of ordering it. I know i should but i don't have any ideas about how the ecommerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice

    1. I can understand your point of view on this issue. If I were you I would maybe try and cut back on ordering things online because I learned it actually does have a serious environmental affect. But overall this was a good response and your writing is getting better. Keep up the good work bro!

    2. Great response! I agree with a lot of the points that you made. I never really think about the environmental impact ordering things online can have either. Maybe one way you can save the environment while delivering packages would be to use drones. There would be less fuel being burned, people would get there packages faster, and everyone is happy.

    (It would not upload sorry)
I love the idea of online shopping. It is so cool that I do not have to do anything and I can shop at home. I do not use it that much but it is a really good thing to do. It is so fast and easy and it saves time too. My family uses online shopping not that often. They go out and shop for the stuff so they do not have to wait for it to come in. I did not think about any of the impacts. I personally think that it is not a big thing to worry about. Over time someone will come up with a truck that is green. Meaning it is better for the environment. It is up to you if you want to think twice. I do not shop online as much so I am not the guy to ask. If you want to know then ask a girl because if you look at the charts more girls do online shopping. Not to be mean but it is true. Shopping online is more organized then going to the real shop. The real shop is so big sometimes. For online all you need to do is hit a few buttons and you get what you want. In a store it may take longer. Waiting in line to check out in a store is so long sometimes. So it is easier to buy it online and not in a store. We have a phone, laptop, etc. It is so easy to look up a website. It saves you so much time. I rather go online and have it be shipped to my house. It would take too long for me to go to the store and find it. All I need to do is hit a few things and I find it online. It is really that easy and simple.

    1. I said a couple things similar to what patrick has said. Online shopping is a lot easier but does not necessarily mean its good. It is better because you get it to your door without leaving your house. Not better for the environment because of all the pollution.

When buying things online you should never jump right into what you might think is a “good deal”. Websites like ebay, craigslist and amazon are well known for scammers. A scammer is someone who tricks people into buying something online but doesn’t send the person the product they paid for. This happens very often when buying things like cell phones, tablets, cars and many other things. When you are shopping online for cars be very weary of things like craigslist and ebay. If you see any ads asking you to get a green dot card DO NOT go through with the deal. It is more than likely a scam. My brother bought a car for $1500 off of ebay and was asked to get a green dot card by the seller, when he got it and bought the car the whole ad disappeared and lost his money. Things you can do to prevent online scams. Always look at the seller's info and be very careful when dealing with private sellers. Always use Paypal, Paypal covers all transactions that you aren't satisfied with and will give you your money back. Online shopping is always a fun thing to do, and not everywhere you shop you will get scammed. You just have to look into who you are buying from and don't jump right into something that might look like a good deal hastily. Online shopping can be very convenient, especially when you don’t have a vehicle, or if you aren’t able to find something in the store, most of the time you can easily find what you need online.

  6. Honestly I shop online on average 2 times a month. My family at least 6 times a month. I’ve never thought the environmental impact of buy items online. It never came to my mind now after reading that short passage. How much cardboard we use in this world. Honestly we should because we shouldn’t be producing 35.4 million tons cardboard boxes a year. That I ridiculous how much cardboard we produce. That is such a waste of cardboard boxes. Yes and no because we could save more cardboard boxes. No because some stores use plastic bags or some other material bags. So we just need to change what we ship our items in. Just to save more cardboard boxes. Just use cardboard boxes if needed.
Yes it’s better to buy at stores because majority stores have everything today. Only if you cannot find anything than consider ordering it online. That would be the only way I would order something online. Stores also may have exclusive items and you can see if you like the clothes. Some people order items and either don’t like it or it’s too small or big. Sometimes it’s fine to order online. People just need to stop being lazy and go check the store. Online shopping sometimes can be bad. You can find frauds and in stores majority time you will not be finessed. A way companies can stop using so many cardboard boxes is bags. See through bags, opaque bags, and custom bags with their logo. It doesn’t hurt nature as cardboard boxes do. It’s just a better idea than wasting boxes. Companies should seriously consider this.

  7. In my opinion I do not believe that we should buy certain things online. I don't think it is safe to give such information out to certain people. In this world it has been proven that you just can't trust anyone. From identity theft to just flat out taking money out of the bank. No one's trust worthy especially if it involves money. It also has to do with ordering something and not getting what you ordered. Buying a cellphone online isn't a smart idea, I should know. Bought a cellphone for forty bucks, cheap. Just so I can have a backup for my videos and just unnecessary stuff that didn't need to take up space on my real phone. Once it came in I was very disappointed to find out that it was rocks in a box. I literally paid for a box of rocks. Than not to long ago my mother had bought a dress online as well. I tried to warn her to be careful but she saw the picture and fell in love with it. It was sad to see my open the box and get a dress that didn't even look at what she had so fallen in love with. It breaks my heart to see her so sad and I wouldn't want anyone else to get cheated out of there money I don't think it's fair. I don't believe that people have the right to do that to others it's not very nice to the people that will give you their money. So at the end of the day all I'm saying is I do not trust it and I think everyone should think twice before buying anything online.
