Student Question | Should We Think Twice Before Buying Online?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  FEBRUARY 23, 2016 5:30 AM February 23, 2016 5:30 am Comment

With the click of a button, we can have almost anything delivered right to our front door — sneakers, toothpaste, even groceries. But what’s the environmental cost of all those home deliveries? The billions of discaded cardboard boxes and fleets of trucks zipping around neighborhoods?
Should we think twice before making online purchases?
In “E-Commerce: Convenience Built on a Mountain of Cardboard,” Matt Richtel writes:
Ruchit Garg, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, says that he worries that something isn’t right with his Internet shopping habit. With each new delivery to his doorstep — sometimes several in a day — he faces the source of his guilt and frustration: another cardboard box.
Then, when he opens the shipment, he is often confronted with a Russian nesting doll’s worth of boxes inside boxes to protect his electronics, deodorant, clothing or groceries. Mr. Garg dutifully recycles, but he shared his concerns recently on Twitter.
A handful of scientists and policy makers are circling the same question, grappling with the long-term environmental effect of an economy that runs increasingly on gotta-have-it-now gratification. This cycle leads consumers to expect that even their modest wants can be satisfied like urgent needs, and not always feel so great about it.
The article continues:
The environmental cost can include the additional cardboard — 35.4 million tons of containerboard were produced in 2014 in the United States, with e-commerce companies among the fastest-growing users — and the emissions from increasingly personalized freight services.
“There’s a whole fleet of trucks circulating through neighborhoods nonstop,” said Dan Sperling, the founding director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis, and the transportation expert on the California Air Resources Board. He also is overseeing a new statewide task force of trucking companies and government officials trying to reduce overall emissions from freight deliveries, including for e-commerce.
Dr. Sperling said that consumers shared as much responsibility for the environmental cost of the deliveries as the companies that provided the speedy services.

“From a sustainability perspective, we’re heading in the wrong direction,” he said.

After reading the article, Jamie Gleklen and Robert Schwartz, two members of our new Student Council, wondered: In what ways does the Internet hurt and help the environment? How can we balance convenience with environmental consciousness? And do we have a duty to look after the environment if companies already say that they are working on it?

Students: Read the article, then tell us …

— How much do you shop online? How about your family?

— Have you ever thought about the environmental impact of buying things online? Is it something we should worry about? Should we think twice before making online purchases?

— Are there times when shopping in a brick-and-mortar store makes more sense than buying online, or vice versa? Why?

— Do you have any ideas about how the e-commerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice? Explain.

  1. I have no experiences or what so ever with shopping online maybe when i get older i will shop online but right now i'm not shopping online. My family really doesn't shop online. There's only one person in the house that shops online and that is my sister Ma-Lyfe Vaughn. She is 16 years old and what she buys online is her hair, clothes, shoes, books , etc. To be honest with you, i have never thought about the environmental impact of buying things online because like i said before i have no experiences like so i wouldn't really think about how things are going on with the online buying technique. From what it looks like yes we should worry about it because they are using 35.4 million tons of containerboard. That's a whole lot of containerboard that can be used for something more important in life. Yes i think some people should think twice before making an online purchase because they should realize on how much of this stuff is going to waste when they really could just go to the store and buy it themselves. And yes i know some kids are gonna say “ but i don't have a care” yeah kids that are shopping online is fine but adults not so much. I'm not really understanding this question but ill try. What this is saying is basically would you rather shop in a store more then buying online. Yes i would rather shop in a store because in a store you can try things on and see what size you really wear instead of going online buying a shirt that you can barely fit and then you have to return in by shipping it back. Same as pants you could try on your pants in the store and not worry about if you have the right size or not.

    1. Honestly I don't even know why people shop online. Half the things people get online you can get in stores for probably a cheaper price, because you don't pay for shipping in a store. :)

    1) I don’t really shop online. I only get things online if they are not in stored, or if it's cheaper online. Honestly, My family doesn't even really shop online. We usually go to a store and get what we need. Online is usually the last resort. We make sure we check almost everywhere before we go online. I've only gotten three things online my entire life that i can remember. I got shoes,a hat, and some cologne. It's never really needed unless the product is not in stores.

    2) No, i have never thought about the environmental impact. I don't think about a lot of things. And, online shopping hurting the environment is not one. I don’t worry about the environment when it comes to online shopping. We Have bigger pollution problems like factories, and pollution in general. Why would i worry about a cardboard box, when we have cars, trucks. We have all this smoke and smog in the air, it's hurting us more than online shopping.

    — Are there times when shopping in a brick-and-mortar store makes more sense than buying online, or vice versa? Why?

    3) Buying from the store is probably better in the long run. Because after you build the store there's nothing that has to be done. And there is no cardboard boxes unless they have to order something. If you're constantly ordering stuff online you're always polluting and harming the environment.

    — Do you have any ideas about how the e-commerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice? Explain.

    4) I don't even know what e-commerce is. But if it will help the environment problem go ahead. Let them do what needs to be done to help

: I don't do a lot of online shopping at all only if something is out of stock , or if i needed something but rarely i wouldn't shop online.

: I did order online before, yes it's a process you should have to worry about it before purchasing something. AND ALWAYS THINK TWICE .

:There are many times where it's just better off to go to a store and buy it then from online. It's better off to just go to a store because you could see what you want personally in your eyes and see if comfortable with you for example, like if it was a shirt or pants.

    :not sure.

  4. I don’t shop online. My sisters Gina and Natalie are the only ones who shop online. I never thought about the environment impact of buying things online. I think we should worry about it because the article says that we should. But I think we have bigger problems than cardboard. like ISIS whos gonna be president and immigration and much more. I think that we should think twice before making online purchases because you don’t know if buying it will make you wanna regret buying it after you bought it. i don't know what a brick and mortar store is but anyways lets just call it a store. there are times when shopping at a store makes more sense than buying online because you can see what size you are and if the shirt or anything that your buying fits you or not. And you have to pay more for it to be delivered to your house.my ideas about the e commerce industry and consumers can make online shopping a more sustainable practice is to not charge the person money for the delivery. Also to not take a long time sending in our products because who knows if something is important that they really need.
