Do You Have Any Bad Health Habits?
By CAROLINE CROSSON GILPIN DEC. 7, 2016

Do you have any bad health habits? Is there anything about the way you eat, sleep, use technology, take care of your personal hygiene, or do anything else that doctors or scientists might consider bad for you? Are you worried? Should you be?
In an article with the headline “Children’s Headphones May Carry Risk of Hearing Loss,” Catherine Saint Louis writes:
These days, even 3-year-olds wear headphones, and as the holidays approach, retailers are well stocked with brands that claim to be “safe for young ears” or to deliver “100 percent safe listening.” The devices limit the volume at which sound can be played; parents rely on them to prevent children from blasting, say, Rihanna at hazardous levels that could lead to hearing loss.
But a new analysis by The Wirecutter, a product recommendations website owned by The New York Times, has found that half of 30 sets of children’s headphones tested did not restrict volume to the promised limit. The worst headphones produced sound so loud that it could be hazardous to ears in minutes.
“These are terribly important findings,” said Cory Portnuff, a pediatric audiologist at the University of Colorado Hospital who was not involved in the analysis. “Manufacturers are making claims that aren’t accurate.”
The new analysis should be a wake-up call to parents who thought volume-limiting technology offered adequate protection, said Dr. Blake Papsin, the chief otolaryngologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
“Headphone manufacturers aren’t interested in the health of your child’s ears,” he said. “They are interested in selling products, and some of them are not good for you.”
Students: Read the entire article, and then tell us:
— Do you wear headphones? If so, do you worry about hearing loss, either now or when you are older? Did the article strike a chord with you?
— What other habits do you have that might be considered bad for your health?
— Does it matter to you what scientific studies might show about how you live your life — about your habits with food, sleep, technology, personal hygiene or anything else? Why?

— Have you ever tried to break a bad habit? Were you successful? Tell us in the comments section.

Yes i wear headphones almost 24/7 and at times i worry about other people losing hearing because i don't have my music that loud in my headphones but other people do and it worries me sometimes about what if im like that and i lose my hearing when i get older

Not eating healthy enough or not drinking enough a day because i don't eat or drink as much as i should and im trying to fix it so my health won't be as bad

No i don't because it's mylife and just because studies say something doesn't mean it's best for me everyone is different

If you think about it, most habits are bad for you. Like if you have a smoking habit you have a chance of getting cancer. Or if you cook everything in oil and fry it, you can get in an unhealthy condition. Even a habit like not brushing your teeth could end you up with gum disease, and losing all your teeth. A Lot of habits that people have are not good for them, but they do it anyways.

Scientific studies means nothing in this time period. There was a man who lived to an old age and he ate metal, bikes, rims, and more things you shouldn't consume. Everybody’s body takes things different. Some can handle things some can't. My brother and cousin were drinking, and my cousin drank less and got sick. It's because his body took alcohol different. His body didn't agree with it, my brothers could handle it

My worst habit is probably biting my nails. I tried to break it but i wasn’t able to. Most people cant break bad habits, because sometimes you just do it on accident and you dont realise it. My friend will crack his knuckles and won’t even know he did it until someone says something. Its invisible to yourself.

Yes i do wear headphones and yes i do worry about hearing loss now or later. But this article did not strike a chord with me. So habits that might be bad for my health is sleeping too long or eating ice cream for junk food after i exercise. To be honest no i doesn’t matter because what they say i hear all the time. Now i’m good with personal hygiene and sleep and technology and my food. Maybe now and then i get off track but i’m very good. So no it doesn’t really matter. Yes i've tried to break a habit. It was sleeping too long and eating junk all the time. Yes i was successful. Now as a kid i was very good with sleeping and eating i ate most everything i wasn’t to picky, i ate healthy i loved and still love fruit. I was big on veggies. But as i grew i started to fall of track and eat junk food more. I started to sleep a lot and get lazy. But then i realized that it wasn’t doing me any good so i started to get good amount of sleep eat right again and i was back on track. It wasn’t to hard so i made it well. Bad habits are a bad thing. They come and are very hard to get rid of. They aren’t fun and can make things in life hard. A bad habit i have is turning the volume on my headphones louder. I know it's bad for me and i’m trying to fix it. But i turn them high when i don’t want to hear people or something. For example in class when i want to focus on my work and work quietly, i turn my volume up high so i can’t hear anyone and focus. Using headphones you need to think about your hearing and always be careful.

  4. 1.)Yes i wear headphones , and no i don’t worry about hearing loss because i don’t manage to blast my music when i know serious injuries can happen.
2.) The one things that's really bad for me is i constantly eat cheese a lot lol and my mom and uncle tells me that the way i eat cheese can stuff up your digestive system and i'm not gonna be able to use the bathroom correctly. But i'm perfectly fine.
3.) No it really doesn’t matter to me because i have a mom that takes care of me and i'm pretty sure she's not going to poison my food or do anything else to keep me unhealthy. What she's really trying to do is keep me healthy honestly.
4.) To be honest i did break a bad habit , but i'm not gonna put it in the blog because i ( me ) personally don't want my business out there but to consider it all i'm doing perfectly fine.

  5. I wear headphones but I don’t put the volume loud.I don’t worry about hearing loss right now but when I get older I probably will. The article did not strike a chord with me.Getting mad because when I do I can’t control myself sometimes. When I say that I’m going to finish something and then I don’t because I am tired or don’t feel like it.Scientific studies do matter but every single person can choose on how to live there life. They shouldn’t let anyone, any article,or anything else tell you what choices to make. The only person who can tell you how to live it is yourself. No one else knows your life better than you.Everyone is different some wake up early and some wake up late in the afternoon. Some are athletic and others are smart. No one is the same every single person and individual is unique in their own way.I tried to break a bad habit even though I don’t see it as a bad habit people think it is.I tried to stop “talking back” to my mom but it didn’t even last over a day. It’s very hard to end a habit especially if you do it alot or often sometimes you don’t think you are doing it but you are.Once you do something and keep on doing it than its very hard to stop its like an addiction and you can’t control the need of that habit.I was not very successful in controlling and stopping my habit.

  6. -Yeah i wear headphones, and i don't really worry about hearing loss as of now or when i'm older. I don't worry because i don't use the volume to loud as i'm listening to music . If you were to use them everyday with the volume high there could be a chance of hearing loss.

    - Another habit that could be bad for your health is being close to electronics because it can give you eyesight problems where when you might need glasses.

-I think it matters what scientific have to say about our health on food and bad habits on our bodies because it's all things we happen to do and could damage us without us knowing.

    -Never had a bad habit.
