Student Question | What’s Your Dream Job?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  MARCH 10, 2016 5:00 AM March 10, 2016 5:00 am

What do you want to be when you grow up? Has your dream job changed as you’ve gotten older? Have you already started investing time and effort to try to make it happen?

In “The New Dream Jobs,” Jenna Wortham writes:

When the National Society of High School Scholars asked 18,000 Americans, ages 15 to 29, to rank their ideal future employers, the results were curious. To nobody’s surprise, Google, Apple and Facebook appeared high on the list, but so did the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The Build-A-Bear Workshop was No. 50, just a few spots behind Lockheed Martin and JPMorgan Chase. (The New York Times came in at No. 16.)

However scattershot, the survey offers a glimpse into the ambitions of the millennial generation, which already makes up more than a third of the work force. By 2020, it will make up half. Survey after survey shows that millennials want to work for companies that place a premium on employee welfare, offer flexible scheduling and, above all, bestow a sense of purpose. These priorities are well known and frequently mocked, providing grist for the oft-repeated claim that millennials are lazy, entitled job-hoppers.

But it’s important to remember that this generation was shaped by a recession, an unprecedented crush of student debt and a broad decline in the credibility of all kinds of institutions. Stability is an abstract concept to these young workers, so they instead tend to focus on creating a rich, textured life now, rather than planning for a future obscured by uncertainty.

Students: Read the entire article, then answer the questions below:
— What’s your dream job? Why do you want that job? Do you think you’re well suited for it?

— What qualities are most important to you in your future career? Salary? A sense of purpose? Scheduling flexibility? Feeling challenged? Feeling appreciated? The ability to get ahead? Liking what you do or being good at your job? Anything else?

— What investments are you willing to make now to help you get your dream job eventually?

— What companies would you want to work for? Are you surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings? Why?

  1. If I had to pick a dream job I would choose to be a businessman. I would want to be a businessman because I would be able to help people with anything they need and to make lots of money. I also want this job because I am good with money and helping others. Next I think I could be a good fit in this job because you have to be able to stay calm with people and persuade people about certain things. Also you have to be able to stay patient and work with as many people as possible. Qualities that are important in my future career are being nice and friendly. You have to be nice and friendly because you want people to be interested in what you're telling them. You have to like what you do or you can get bored and mad easily. Talking to many people can get you mad and tired and not care about the job anymore. Also it is very time consuming because you have many meetings. Some investments that I am interested in doing are going to a good college. Going to a good college helps your education and helps you get better jobs. It looks good on your resume. I want to go to a four year college to help get a good job. Another investment is when I apply for a job I want to look like I already work there so that it looks official. There are many companies I would like to work for. I would like to work for Nike or Jordan. Also I would like to work for Adidas. I would like to be a businessman for big companies like those or any other sporting company like Spalding. I am not surprised because most high schoolers are lazy when it comes to working. Also most high schoolers don't even like talking about how they are going to get a job because they don't want to work.

    1. I agree to wanting a job that makes lots of money. you say similar things to me like doing what you want because or else you will get bored and mad easily. Investments are big thing especially if you want to go to college and get a good job. Going to a good college does help you education because that what most people look at when they see you have a college degree.

  2. My dream job would be to make medicine. My dream job has changed over the years. I have been trying to invest time and effort into this. I would like the job because it seems like a interesting job and one that i like for now. I think i might be suited for it. I think the most important qualities to me in the future are salary, feeling challenged, the ability to get ahead, liking what i do, and being good at what i do. The salary will definitely be something i think is a important quality because that’s the whole point of going to college, going to do something you like and the salary. The salary is important because with inflation going up three percent each year you are going to need more money to be able to pay for the stuff you will need to survive and the things you want. Feeling challenged is also a quality i want to have because the more you get challenged the more you get better at whatever you are doing, you also want to be the best at what you are doing. The feeling to get ahead is also a good quality to have because it also goes along with being the best at what you do. It’s always a good feeling to be better than someone else in what you do. I would be willing to make lots of investments to get me where i want to be in the future and doing what i want to do. Especially because what you want to do is most likely what you will be doing for the rest of your life. It is very important to invest and put much effort into what you want to do when you get older because it will be a little easier and you want to do what you like doing not just for the money or else you won’t like waking up everyday doing what you hate.

    1. Good response brotha. That is a very interesting dream job. That takes a lot of school and studies and i give respect to anyone wanting to do that. You are making medicine to help and even cure people and it takes a good person to do that. I agree the salary is most important because its all about the money in today's society and doing that will get you a lot of money. Good job and good luck with that dream job.

  3. My dream job is to be a starting pro bowl quarterback for the new york football giants in the NFL. The reason why i really want that job is a few actually, first off is because i just simply love football. Football is life for me and i wish and hope to god that i can play on the next level. But not only just play be successful. I wanna be the greatest to ever do it, anyone that says differently is lying. Secondly who wouldn't want to play for their favorite team. G- Men all day baby. And lastly Quarterback is the highlight most action watched position on the field and that happens to be my position that i play and that i love. Do i think i'm well suited for it now? Absolutely not, but with work and training and time i could make a run for it to at least try to be suited enough to make it to that level i want to be at. The qualities that are most important to me in my future career is to be a very hard working man that gets his jobs done in its entirety. Also i wanna be a very easy going guy to get along with and be around, that is a very important quality i have now because you do not want to work around people who do not like you or enjoy your presence. That just does not mix for a great outcome. I want to be paid very well because i plan on being a great employee, i want employees of the month and of the year raises and even position step ups i expect that out of myself and i know that i can do it. I wanna have a reasonable schedule nothing to much but if i have to work a lot i will. It's all about the mulla at the end of the day. I want my boss to challenge me with the hard assignments so i prove myself and people appreciate my hard work and time the right way. Most importantly i definitely want to like my job, i don't wanna be miserable doing a job i wanna enjoy it while making money and having fun all at the same time because that's the good life. The investments i'm willing to make to get my dream job or side jobs i want is to really focus up and learn more and work harder to reach it. Companies i would want to work for is the nfl or anything involving sports, child care, or therapist. Those are things i'm most interested in and hope to one day reach in my future life.

    1. Those are awesome goals Eli. I hope one day you do make it to the NFL so I could see you live your dreams. I hope the rest of the world could live their dreams also. You only live once so make it count. Good response dude.

  4. When I grow up I want to be a famous rapper. I want to become this because It has always been a dream since I was a kid. Being a rapper and making money doing what I love would be the coolest thing in the world to me. I’m not completely sure if I’m well suited for the job yet but I would adapt quickly to my environment just like I do with everything else in life. The qualities that are most important in this career is lyrical skill, personality, and how you dress. If you have all these qualities you will be a very successful rapper, have a remarkable career and go down as one of the greatest. Your salary can vary in this business called the rap game, you can either make $0 a year or $100,000,000 a year depending on how successful you are. That’s why you have to have skill to do something like this and stick with it for life. A downside to this lifestyle choice though is the scheduling. You will always be busy touring, recording music, and advertising you will barely have any personal time for yourself. You will definetly feel appreciated though by loving fans. I am willing to risk everything to do this when I am older because you only live once so might as well do what you love and die with no regrets. A record label I would want to be signed to is Def Jam records. They have signed some of the greatest rappers to ever live and I wanna be on that list one day. But honestly I am not surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey. Our generation is full of people who don’t know what they want to do in life and who have no goals, hopefully the next generation will be different.

  5. My dream job for when I get older is to be a professional photographer that travels the world and take's pictures of nature and wild life animals. I want this job for many reasons. I want to see the world and travel everywhere. I also love nature and animals and being able to travel everywhere in the world and capture moments I will never get back is something I would love to do. I think I am well suited for this job because I go to docs for photography to improve myself from what I already know. There aren't many qualities you need when doing this. The only thing I do hope is I have someone to spend the great adventures and memories with and have money to experience this. I feel like doing this has a purpose because seeing the world is a dream everyone has and If I do it and take pictures and captures those moments ill never forget them. I feel like it will also be nice to just get away from everyone after high school is over, It’s a job that I would love to do and wouldn't complain about waking up early and doing it. My schedule won’t truly matter to me because I am doing what I love and i enjoy doing it, Even if I have to wake up at 5 am for a sunrise it won’t matter cause I am enjoying those moments loving what I do. I feel like i’ll be very appreciated by other photographers or people that enjoy the pictures I take. I am willing to make investments in stocks and also getting more than one job to save up money for my future to have a start. This is my dream job and if it comes true I will die knowing I lived the best life I could and had the best job anyone could ask for, I also know I have made my parents proud and will also know it was the best life ever.

  6. Actually don't know what my dream job is. Its actually funny I'm just such a versatile person. As a kid I said I wanted to work in Footlocker which I still do kind of. Am I fit for the job? yes I know a lot about sneakers and I'm a out going person which would help me get my sales. I said this when I was a little boy I wanted to work there. I just like shoes and I wouldn't mind selling them to somebody. My actual dream job is hard I cant really decide on what it is. I just want to be in a field that I make a good amount of money and where I love doing my job. That's what I want my dream job to be. I want to be in a job were people like me, were I love what I'm doing, and were I have a good salary. I want to have a salary that's over 100 grand I know that's a lot of money but if it means working my way up then ok. I like challenges I don't mind being challenged every now and then. I definitely need to be feeling appreciated I just feel if your not appreciated for what you do then why work there. There's no point wasting my time In a job were I'm not wanted. I am surprised by the surveys people need to take jobs more seriously. Many people in this world have a tough and rough time finding jobs in this country. So people need to find what there good at and what they like doing and go get a job. I don't see how people would like to work in Buildabear like that's ridiculous only kids would want to work there. they need to start looking into bigger and better things. Also, they need to find a good job before there is none.
